API 600 vs API 602 vs API 6D Valve Standards

API 600 vs API 602 vs API 6D Valve Standards

API 600, API 602 and API 6D are often mentioned in the same valve inquiry, but they are not interchangeable labels. Each standard relates to a different application context and valve construction. Understanding the distinction helps buyers request the right product and avoid accepting a substitute that only appears similar.

API 600: steel gate valves for process and refinery service

API 600 is commonly associated with bolted-bonnet steel gate valves used in refinery, petrochemical and general process piping. These valves are often specified for larger-bore applications and may use wedge-gate construction, outside screw and yoke, flanged, butt-weld or ring-joint connections depending on project requirements.

When requesting an API 600 gate valve, still specify size, ASME pressure class, body material, trim, end connection, bore, packing, test scope and operating conditions. "API 600" by itself does not complete the valve data sheet.

API 602: compact forged-steel gate, globe and check valves

API 602 is commonly used for compact forged-steel gate, globe and check valves, particularly in smaller bore, higher-pressure process and utility piping. Socket-weld, threaded and butt-weld end connections are frequently encountered, but the project specification governs.

These valves are chosen where a forged construction and small-bore pressure service are appropriate. Confirm material, pressure class, bonnet arrangement, trim, packing and end connection instead of assuming every API 602 valve has the same configuration.

API 6D: pipeline valves

API 6D is associated with pipeline valves for pipeline transportation systems. It is frequently specified for pipeline gate, ball, plug and check valves in oil and gas transmission applications. Features may include full-bore passage, pigging suitability, anti-static or emergency-seal options, and specific test or documentation requirements depending on the project.

Pipeline service introduces requirements that can be different from plant piping: pipeline design, operating philosophy, remote actuation, emergency shutdown and line-pigging may all affect the valve selection.

Quick comparison

Standard Common focus Typical procurement question
API 600 Steel bolted-bonnet gate valves for process piping Is the process isolation valve suitable for the specified class and material?
API 602 Compact forged-steel gate, globe and check valves Is the small-bore high-pressure valve correctly configured?
API 6D Pipeline valves Does the valve meet pipeline operating and pigging requirements?

How to write the RFQ correctly

State the applicable standard plus the full service requirement. A robust request might include: valve type, standard, size, class, material, trim, end connection, design temperature, medium, operation, fire-safe or fugitive-emission requirements, tests, certificates, quantity and delivery schedule.

Also identify the exact standard edition and project specifications when contractually required. Manufacturers should quote against the buyer's current approved requirements, not infer an edition from a short product title.

FAQ

Can an API 600 gate valve replace an API 6D pipeline gate valve?

Not automatically. The standards address different service contexts. Confirm the entire project specification, dimensions, tests and operating requirements before any substitution.

Are API standards the only standards needed on a valve purchase order?

No. A complete order may also reference dimensional, flange, pressure-temperature, testing, material, fire-safe, emissions and client specifications.
